Compare the fixed finishes first
Flooring, stone, tile, cabinetry, siding, and roofing usually stay in place longer than paint. A trim colour should make sense beside those elements.
Watch the undertone
Two whites can look similar on a small chip and very different next to a wall colour. Compare warm, cool, and neutral options in the actual space.
Test in changing light
View a sample in daylight and artificial light before committing. Exterior samples should be checked on more than one side of the property.
Choose the amount of contrast
Higher contrast emphasizes edges and architecture. Lower contrast produces a quieter transition between the main colour and trim.
